The conference is presented by Davidson Day School and American Foreign Academic Research (AFAR). Maya at the Lago and Maya at the Playa, which is held in the Fall in Palm Coast, Florida, were created by Mat Saunders who is President of AFAR and teaches at Davidson Day School.

Mat works hard to make each conference a unique and enjoyable experience. He listens to attendees and tries to incorporate suggestions and ideas to improve the overall success of the conference. One example: Mat realized that the folding chairs used in the auditorium could get uncomfortable. So he searched for better chairs for this year's conference. When none could be found, he provided each person a cushion in their welcome package. Mat's welcome packages are different for each conference. This year's bag is a smal tote that contains the Conference Program, a pen and notebook (shown below), a copy of the Sept/Oct 2011 issue of Archaeology magazine (Archaeology magazine and the Archaeological Institute of America are sponsors), and the cushion.  It was a winner!
